When times are tough, Yes Man reminds us to stay open to life's possibilities.

When finances are tight, people are getting laid off, and life seems to be taking a terrible dive, it’s important to remember to stay connected with friends, explore new opportunities, and take reasonable risks that might lead to something very rewarding. Yes Man is an inspirational and uplifting movie that can remind you how to use the world as your playground.

What’s Yes Man About?

Carl Allen, played by Jim Carrey, is a no-man. He’s a man who has held the same boring job for 5 years, doesn’t go out with his friends, avoids phone calls, and is stuck in that all-too-familiar rut of life. When an old friend drags him to a Yes Man seminar, his life begins to change. Instead of saying no to everything and everyone, Carl starts saying yes. The result? New life adventures, new love, renewed friendship, and an overall improvement on life.

What to Take Away from the Movie

  • Even though you may be feeling closed off from life, it’s as simple as saying “yes” to start turning things around.
  • Connecting with people is one of the most valuable and worthwhile human experiences. If there are no friends calling to invite you out, that’s okay. Be the friend that calls them. Don’t have any friends? Go make some! Don’t know how? Learn.
  • This world is a playground. Take life’s opportunities to have fun, play, giggle, explore, and go on new and exciting adventures – even if it’s to a run-down museum that looks like it has been closed for a while. You never know what refreshing and entertaining things you might find if you just start opening your eyes.
  • Be honest. Honesty is a virtue that all humans should strive to possess. Despite times in our culture when it seems necessary to lie, Yes Man encourages audiences to explore the issue of honesty. Before saying yes, really ask yourself why you are saying yes. Be honest.
  • By pushing yourself into new territory, life will present itself with many opportunities to laugh, connect, and feel better about life. It can be scary and challenging, but new and fresh activities can be just what someone needs when life seems so difficult. The best way to explore new adventures is with someone. Grab a friend or partner and start appreciating the joy, laughter, and love in life.

Beware One Inappropriate Scene for Youngsters

For an all-around funny movie, there are a couple inappropriate and unnecessary scenes. Before watching this movie with your children (rate PG-13), beware of sexual scenes which are offensive and gross. Spoiler Alert: When the neighbor asks Carl for help, you’ll know the scene is coming. If you are comfortable with your children watching jokes about oral sex, then it should be no problem.

Yes Man is a fun, silly, uplifting movie that can be just what the spirit needs during a rough time. Watch it for inspiration and really think about your answer when someone asks you to do something. Will it be yes or no?
